Remember 3 Pool Rules For Safe Smiles

Did you ever think your dentist would be telling you about how to have safe fun near the swimming pool? While this might sound more like something that usually comes out of your mouth as you lecture your little ones, we remind you that there are often hidden smile health dangers that you’re overlooking. To make sure everyone has a wonderful time in the water and that you avoid potential hazards, we offer up a few simple yet important rules to live by.

Rule #1: No Running!

If you’ve said it once, you’ve said it a million times: No running! No running indoors, no running in the grocery store, and most certainly no running by the pool. The water makes for slippery conditions, which means falling and accidental impacts with one’s mouth are on the rise. Keep running under control as part of your smile health plan.

Rule #2: Get Out Correctly

You might find that you’re strict in some areas and a bit more laid back in others. While you might not care too much about your kids getting out of the pool on the ledge (rather than using the steps and handrails), we encourage you to suggest entering and exiting via the steps. Why? Well, young smiles are less likely to make contact with the side of the pool, which means fewer broken teeth.

Rule #3: Only Dive In The Deep End

To avoid smile health related injuries and head injuries, always remember for yourself and children that diving is only safe in the deep end (provided the deep end is deep enough for diving). Check pool depths before getting in, so you can set rules in place first.
