Bonding/Contouring

The Cosmetic Benefits of Tooth Bonding/Contouring

Sometimes, cosmetic issues can appear drastic, but fixing them may not be complicated. Tooth bonding and contouring are separate but similar procedures designed to improve your smile’s appearance with minor alterations to your teeth. Whether you receive one or both cosmetic procedures, bonding and/or contouring can offer significant smile improvement while allowing you to preserve a maximum amount of healthy tooth structure. Tooth bonding is the application of a biocompatible, tooth-colored composite resin to the outer surface of a tooth. The resin is sculpted and hardened for a lifelike finish, and can correct a variety of cosmetic blemishes by adding to the natural tooth structure. Similarly, contouring can also change the size, shape, and appearance of a tooth, but does so through the gentle sculpting of the tooth’s outer layer of enamel.

During Your Visit

Tooth bonding and contouring can be recommended for a number of issues, including stubborn teeth stains, chipped or worn tooth edges, spaces between teeth, rough tooth surfaces, and more. Before recommending bonding or contouring, Dr. Folck or one of our associates will examine your teeth to ensure that they are healthy enough to modify, and that bonding and/or contouring is the most beneficial option.

To perform tooth bonding, we will apply a custom-tinted, tooth-colored composite resin to the tooth surface. After artfully shaping the material, he will then harden and polish the resin for a strong, natural-looking finish. To perform tooth contouring, we will gently sculpt the rough, jagged, or overlapping edge(s) of the tooth, making sure not to alter any unnecessary tooth structure. The procedure is gentle enough that most patients do not require anesthesia, and you should feel minimal or no tooth sensitivity afterwards.
