What Makes A Partial A Partial?

You have heard all about dentures and you know that they provide you with a convenient means of replacing missing teeth that you have lost. What you aren’t sure about, perhaps, is what it means when we reference a partial denture. Is this different than a full denture, you might wonder? What type of tooth loss is it for … and is it right for you? We are happy to take the mystery out of this popular and very beneficial option for filling spaces and bringing your smile back to completion.

Why Is It Called A Partial?

You will love how easy this is to remember. The reason it’s called a partial denture (or just a “partial”) is because it replaces partial tooth loss. It’s not a full denture but just part of one, essentially. Keep in mind that this refers to a removable prosthetic and not a dental bridge, which is a fixed device that replaces only one tooth or multiple teeth missing in a row (up to three).

Will It Replace Any Amount Of Teeth?

Good question. Fortunately, you may replace any amount of partial tooth loss (replacing a full arch of teeth will require a full denture). The order of the missing teeth (whether they are near one another, in a row, separated by natural teeth, etc.) is not significant. Partial dentures help many patients regain their smiles.
