Do you know why your gums look the way they do? Do you think that they look a bit fuller than other people’s (and it has always been that way)? Have you ever felt embarrassed by your smile because it looks like you can see much more of your gum tissue than you would like? Maybe your teeth look short but you cannot figure out why they’re so small. In many instances, we can address these esthetic dilemmas with gum contouring. Let’s review whether it may work for you.
If Your Gums Are Healthy
If your gums are perfectly healthy, then we can rule out issues like gum disease. In most cases, this will point to the fact that your “puffy gums” make you a good candidate for gum contouring. We will not simply dive in but will first talk with you about what you hope to achieve with your treatment. Then, we’ll talk over the potential details of how contouring may help and determine if it’s something you’re comfortable with.
If They Are Not Healthy
Two things might happen here. We may determine that your gum tissue is not healthy and that this is the cause of issues like a puffy appearance. If so, we will suggest periodontal care. Or, we may determine that your gums are unhealthy and that gum contouring may be suitable for a separate esthetic issue. When this is the case, we will begin by caring for your gum health. Then, once an issue (like gingivitis) is resolved, we may move forward with cosmetic contouring for your gums.
