When it comes to procedures such as needing to get a tooth removed, this could be incredibly worrisome. At Absolute Dental of Virginia Beach, CA, Dr. Folck and his team are here to make this experience as positive as possible. In today’s blog, we are here to tell our patients about the benefits of getting a tooth extracted and what to expect when you go in for this procedure.

Removing A Tooth Can Be Helpful

There are many reasons why someone may need to get a tooth removed. Some of the most common reasons may include an infected tooth that cannot be restored, overcrowding, wisdom teeth growing in, or planning to have an implant placed. While this may seem daunting to some patients, an extraction could save you a lot of time, money, and pain. Preventive care can help avoid some causes for removing a tooth, but some cases are unavoidable.

This common procedure is performed in our office so that you do not have to worry about being referred to a new office. First, your dentist will of course determine if an extraction is necessary. In some cases, an infected tooth can be repaired with proper care. Overcrowding can be treated with orthodontic options. However, if the tooth will make alignment difficult or uneven, removal is the best option. When it comes to your third molars, also known as your wisdom teeth, removal is recommended because of how difficult it can be to clean between those teeth and other problems that can come along with those extra teeth. Once the surgery is determined, your appointment will be scheduled.

During The Extraction

When you go into this appointment, you will be sedated. This allows you to be comfortable, and your dentist can work on the area with minimal disturbance. Once you are numbed, we will gently loosen the tooth so that we can remove it with ease. Then, the tooth will be extracted. In some cases, gum tissue may need to be removed as well. To help with the bleeding afterward, gauze will be placed in the area.

Caring For Yourself After The Procedure

After the procedure, it is normal to experience swelling and minimal discomfort. If you begin to feel more intense pain, call your dentist. It is important to ensure that the area does not become infected. You will have to avoid crunchy foods for the next few days while you recover. Be sure to also avoid drinking through a straw and smoking, because this can cause dry sockets which can be painful and delay your healing time.
